Somebody somewhere knows someone who has a friend who has a cousin who knows someone who is desperately looking for the ideal candidate for their company. You happen to be that ideal candidate but how do they know that. How is it possible to match you with that particular employer? Many times we hear that somebody landed their dream job because they knew someone in the company. That doesnt necessarily mean nepotism has taken place though it does mean that Networking has taken place.

One way to apply for jobs is to look online at websites to see who is advertising and apply online by their online application system or by e-mail. But if you ONLY carry out your job search in this electronic way you may not be successful. You need to get out; you need to be meeting with people.

Every time you meet someone, in a coffee shop, on the LRT at the park. All of these times are networking opportunity. Treat every conversation as though it may lead to an interview. What do you have to lose?

If someone recommends that you speak with another person. Get in touch, offer to buy them lunch or a coffee. Be honest, tell they why you would like to meet with them. You may be surprised by their generosity and their willingness to give up their time, especially if you pay for lunch. If they recommend someone else, follow the lead. They may know someone, who knows someone who is looking for you.

Join as many interest groups as you can, especially if they are related to your field. Join professional associations where possible. Read the local paper, visit your local community centre, and join the library to find out about events where you will have an opportunity to meet others. Volunteer, especially if you can volunteer your skills, youll be networking while you are demonstrating.

At CCIS we have Networking for Successwhere you will have the opportunity to meet with top employers and professionals to assist in career goals. Enhance your communication skills and increase your knowledge of the Canadian workforce. You will be invited to Network Breakfasts and Business Sessions. As mentioned before, what do you have to lose?
